South Lake Schools Update - September 1, 2020

August 31, 2020

Dear South Lake Families:

First, I would like to recognize that 2020 has been like no other that we have ever experienced!  Although things are very different from what they were just a few months ago, the one constant is the fact that South Lake Schools is still here for our students and families.  Our teachers, administrators, and staff have worked harder than ever to prepare for the return of our students.  Their dedication to our students makes me grateful to be a part of South Lake Schools and proud to be a Cavalier!

First day of school for students has moved to Thursday, September 10, 2020.  Considering the many changes that occurred throughout the summer, the first day of school for students will now be Thursday, September 10th.  Students will have a half day of online instruction in the morning.

All students will begin the school year with online instruction.  When the Board of Education approved our Reopen, Reimagine, Reengage Plan, they also determined that all students will begin the year with online instruction only.  Students will receive daily livestreamed instruction from their teachers that follows their normal schedule and building times.

The Board of Education approved the Reopen, Reimagine, Reengage Plan for South Lake Schools at the August 19th Board of Education meeting.  The Reopen, Reimagine, Reengage Plan includes a hybrid schedule for secondary students that splits students into two groups for both face-to-face instruction and online instruction.  Secondary students will receive alternating face-to-face instruction and live streamed instruction.  Parents and guardians who are not comfortable with any face-to-face instruction may choose livestreamed instruction only.  The plan also includes face-to-face instruction for elementary students with an option for parents to enroll their child in the South Lake Digital Academy.  Students enrolled in the SLDA will receive instruction from an online South Lake teacher through the first semester.

All South Lake Schools students will receive an iPad for the 2020-21 school year.  Thanks to the funds available from our bond that was passed by our community, iPads were purchased for all K -12 students.  Individualized learning is central to our mission and the use of iPads will help our teachers to differentiate instruction for our students.

Avalon Elementary, Elmwood Elementary, and Koepsell Elementary have a new configuration.  When the Board of Education approved the Reopen, Reimagine, Reengage Plan it included a provision to reconfigure our elementary buildings.  This reconfiguration allows us to balance and reduce elementary class sizes to safely allow for face-to-face instruction.  Starting this school year, Avalon Elementary will house all students in grades K – 2, Elmwood Elementary will house all students in grades 3 – 5, and Koepsell Elementary will house all Pre-K students and programs.

South Lake High School, Avalon Elementary, and Elmwood Elementary have new start and end times.  The start and end times of the high school and elementary buildings changed as a result of the elementary reconfiguration.  Building times are as follows:

Fresh filters are on all HVAC systems thanks to the maintenance staff.  The maintenance staff worked throughout the summer to replace the filters in all HVAC units.  This process is completed every summer and on a quarterly schedule throughout the school year.  Although our current HVAC units already bring fresh air into the classrooms, we are also working on replacing screens for windows as open windows allow for additional fresh air within classrooms.

As excitement for the new school year grows, thank you for your ongoing commitment to South Lake Schools.  As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions or points of affirmation.

Sincerely,

T. VonHiltmayer
